Okay I know we've all had to have experienced this. You're at the self checkout in Home Depot or Shaws, with your five things to buy, and the stupid machine gets into one of it's "unexpected" cycles... "Unexpected item in bagging area! Please remove item to continue." Okay... exactly what item WERE you expecting? Fine. I'll remove it. "Item removed from bagging area!!!!" Well, okay then. I'll put it back. "Unexpected item in bagging area!" ok fine "ITEM REMOVED FROM BAGGING AREA!!!" wha??? "UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA!!!!" stop yelling at me "ITEM REMOVED FROM BAGGING AREA!!!!!!!!!" So now you are stuck with this thing going haywire and of course there is no one around to help you out. I think it is clear these machines are on a power trip and need to be stopped before they become self aware. No seriously, someone needs to figure out how to calibrate the scale on the bagging properly. This happens to me routinely and it's frustrating as hell because you really can't get out of the cycle. I usually end up half lifting up whatever I just put in the bag so that it weighs less and satisfies the machine... if you find the right point you can get it to shut up. But then you're stuck holding the thing with one hand, lest it start yelling at you again, so you have to check out the rest of your stuff with one hand. It totally sucks. What ever happened to hiring cashiers? Also, why does it check the weight of the thing at all? After all there is no one there actually checking anything. If I wanted to steal something... I just wouldn't put it in the bagging area...

Have you considered yelling back at it? Maybe some tough love would help. 2. jholtz Hey half the time the line for the self checkout is as long or longer than for the cashiers. I noticed that those things go nuts with weightless items (ie makeup) and funky shaped items (ie broom). At my local Shaw's, I finally found a button that says, "skip bagging area" or something. It basically allows you to NOT put anything on the scale, and you get to just put it in a bag, I guess. 5.
