I live in Somerville.  There is a law that residents of houses must clear the sidewalk in front of the house (or is it owners of houses?).  Yet, every morning on my walk to the T, I almost break my neck trying to walk down the sidewalk.  It's not THAT hard to shovel a sidewalk.  If you can't do it, hire someone to do it.  And don't wait until it's frozen over, 3 days later.  Do it while it's snowing!

Heck, I live on a corner lot with probably 100 feet of sidewalk altogether, and I still manage to get it done.  I'm going to have to start wearing ice skates to the T from now on!

It's a drag. I feel like I should bring crampons to work sometimes. I wish the city would enforce that law better.

No joke on the crampons... I live on top of spring hill in somerville. It's like scaling everest sometimes. Crampons and oxygen tanks are a necessity.

Someone's been watching the discovery channel lately... I am addicted to that everest show.

Well I don't live in somerville and don't really walk on sidewalks so I can't weigh in much on this, but I'd say you should talk to whoever your representative is for your district in the city and see if they can make something happen.

MBTA is guilty of this. The other day, I called the "Cambridge Hot-line" to report an un-shoveled sidewalk next to my building. I was rudely told to call the MBTA and how it is not Cambridge's responsibility. Well...how helpful is that?

I tried calling MBTA, but I didn't even know where to start. I didn't want to sue them or anything. I just wanted to be able to walk to my work.

umm...govt center? I am not sure if I am satisfied with their shoveling. ice ice everywhere. i think they have trouble shoveling on that brick.

I am sure it is nicely shoveled from Menino's parking spot to the entrance.[smiley=evil]

I live in Beacon Hill, and, believe it or not, there are few owners who didn't shovel. And there are few who shoveled too late, so there is either a lot of ice or they ran out of place to put the snow. This is making the area extremely difficult to get around. Do you know how much hill I have to get down to go to work on Cambridge street?!

Yes, Mr. Romney's house is nicely cleaned.[smiley=wink]

I saw your article on BostonNow. Excellent job. The "masters" on the site should post more rants on that website.

Emily,
I actually fell this morning on Garden St. and slid about 12 feet down the hill, while taking out this guy in his hospital scrubs, and didn't stop until I hit a garbage bag (left out for a pick up - which wasn't coming due to snow). True story. It almost sounds like a beginning of a corny movie, but, nope, he wasn't my type. Anyways, my point is...it's brutal living on the hill.

I hear you about the MBTA. I've been told the same thing. I did call the hotline in Cambridge to report people who hadn't shoveled. A day or so later, the MBTA had shoveled around their parking lot near Lechmere... BUT, the mound that was utterly blocking the sidewalk that was a result of a parking spot being plowed out in the lot and onto the sidewalk was still there. The lazy SOBs didn't bother to try to shovel it out and it was the whole problem!!! I'm sure they didn't get any fines even though the sidewalk was impassible until it all melted.

As for government center, don't get me started on the fact that someone continues to think bricks are a good idea all over the city!! Another example of how retarded of a surface material they are ...
