I am submitting another rant following up on my last message.  Here's another question that I hate when waiter or waitress asks as I sit down at the table. 

"Can I bring you a bottle of water? Do you prefer mineral or sparkling?"  - Whatever happened to plain TAP water?  Why must you ask me to order these 12 dollar bottles of crystal clean water that was shipped from the mountains of France or clear springs of Fiji?  I don't know what kind of "estate" that you were brought up in, but I like my tap water just fine. 

Have you considered how uncomfortable it is to respond, "No I think I will try your finest TAP water today...you know the one that comes out of your faucet.  Yes, I know it's the same water as what your dog drinks and we flush the toilets with, but I think it'll do wonders if you can serve it in one of your fancy glasses.  In fact...even better...can you pour your TAP <dramatic pause> water into a Fiji bottle, so Mr. Investment Banker at the next table doesn't mistaken me for a pot of fern?"

I can only assume that you are asking to make me look cheap in front of my friends.  ...sigh...  When did it become so hard to order water?  Isn't it supposed to be default? 

My point is...don't ask.   I will order the damn mineral water when I want to...perhaps after this lottery wins me my 200 million.

What really gets to me is when a bar won't give you tap water. I've been to a couple where I was refused when I asked for water. They try to sell you bottled water. It seems like offering free tap water is a must, or else you end up with more drunk people, driving, starting fights, etc.

dude this is so true. why is water so hard to get these days. its so extremely lame.

Don't let me get started on how wasteful mineral water is. Imagine all the plastic bottles thrown away and gasoline being wasted on transporting water that is already being pushed through all of our water pipes.

i read an article the other day about how the fiji water plants are destroying the environment on the fiji island, pouring their wastes into the water sources. ironically locals are now drinking polluted water.

Did you guys hear about the ad campaign by Fiji Water that angered the city of Cleveland? It said, "The label says Fiji because it's not bottled in Cleveland."

The cleveland thing is funny. i really hate when I can't get tap water. like you pointed out bottled water is usually just tap water anywas.

I have served in restaurants who make it mandatory that we sell bottled water. We were not allowed to offer tap water at all. People need to complain to the mngt. about it 'cuz the servers (believe me)think it is bullshit as well.

Plain and simple, it's just another tactic restaurant owners employ to make money. Complain to the management. There is nothing your server/hostess can do about it. It is part of their job. They HAVE to ask you that.

Quit Yer, great point about how restaurants have their ways of increasing their revenue.

To add, I think we all get that the waiters HAVE to say that. I think we are poking fun at how we feel uncomfortable with certain questions by the restaurants. I can relate to this rant, because, even though I know "why" the question is being asked, I still feel awkward.

Just like in the other thread, let's make sure that the rant is targeted towards the restaurants. My wife is a hostess (not waitress), but I want her to be in a better mood today.

A restaurant is a buisness, and we have restaurants to make money, and we expect people to bring money.
We have costumers who ask for water and they order limes to make their own lemmonade. Thats why some of us rather sale bottles of water.
As an advice, whenever u feel u arent gonna make it with the economical part, ask your mom to cook or fix yourself something to eat at home.

Its something we have to deal with everyday. But now we also charge for a bowl of lemon.

Me and my Husband have a small Tearooms in the UK and we get asked for 30 to 40 glasses of tap water a day we have to pay water rate clean them serve them so it's not free to us and they don't order other drinks as well so we are at a loss, is you compare it to a cup of coffee or tea. We are going to charge 10p a glass soon. WHY should it be free have to pay for every thing else.
