I hate those three-prong outlets being installed upside down.  Yes, I am talking about how they are supposed to look like faces…two eyes and a round “surprised look” mouth as the ground.  I don’t understand the electricians who install them.  Who wants to look at upside down faces, if you can even call them that.

For optimum safety, the ground should be at the top.

There have been fatal house fires caused by something as simple as a wire coat-hanger accidentally being dropped near the outlet, and contacting both of the live contacts, thereby arcing across both, and causing an electrical short with sparks.

Think about it ....

But how would inverting the socket prevent that?

I don't see what having the ground at the top has to do with anything. how does that make it harder for a coat hanger to get into the outlet? how on earth does and accidentally dropped coat hanger possibly get into both of the hot slots??

And yeah, Asahi, I don't get the upside-down outlets either. Why don't people fix it? I'm sure it's due to people who don't know what they are doing installing the outlet. If I saw that I'd check it with an outlet tester for sure.
