Everywhere I look there are dust bunnies!  Just when I think I've vacumed them all up, the next night I'll see one hiding out under the coffee table, or under the TV stand, or something.  Drinking a beer and watching TV.  Not paying me rent.  I just can't keep them away.  And you know as well as I do, once you see one, they start multiplying like... well, like bunnies.

Where do these things come from?  Does all the dust just like to get together and party?  I really don't get it.  Why does all the dust have to stick together like that.  Do they just come inside during the winter to get out of the cold?  Are they spying on me?  Or are they some sort of omen?  And forget whipping out the dust buster on those puppies.  Way too big.  I have to get my shop vac up from the basement to take care of them.  It feels like ghostbusters with their ghost catching machine.

I live in Somerville.  There is a law that residents of houses must clear the sidewalk in front of the house (or is it owners of houses?).  Yet, every morning on my walk to the T, I almost break my neck trying to walk down the sidewalk.  It's not THAT hard to shovel a sidewalk.  If you can't do it, hire someone to do it.  And don't wait until it's frozen over, 3 days later.  Do it while it's snowing!

Heck, I live on a corner lot with probably 100 feet of sidewalk altogether, and I still manage to get it done.  I'm going to have to start wearing ice skates to the T from now on!

Call me old fashioned, but this really bugs me.  Is the point of Thanksgiving to celebrate our gluttony, or to give thanks for what we have?

It would be like calling Christmas "Present Day." I'm not a religious dude but even I can see the sacrelige in that.  Wait, "present day" actually means something... bad example...  It's like calling Easter "Eat Your Chocolate Bunny Day"... wait, that sounds bad...  ok never mind.  You get my point.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone Cool

I hate this in between stuff.

Who's idea was it to settle in the northeast?  Didn't the pilgrims learn when half of them didn't make it through the first winter???

Few weeks ago, I became a father to a wonderful and beautiful daughter. She was born during game 7 of RedSox ALSC, so needless to say, she is already a RedSox fan.  How lucky is she that she only had to wait one week for Red Sox's World Series win.

So, my wife and I had spent 2 days in the hospital after the big bang. Needless to say, we were extremely tired, and we were desperate to get home and sleep in our own bed. (Of course, we find out later that we still didn't get to sleep, but that's a whole another story.)

So, we signed some paperwork, rolled out of the main gate of the hospital, where we introduced our baby to the world.  I had pulled up my car, and continued to place the car seat snuggly into the.....wait a minute, the straps are all tangled and I can't remember how to put them back on!

Plumbers: must re-mortgage house to afford minor plumbing work Print E-mail

Anyone have any ideas on how to keep plumbers honest?

I've used a couple different ones for different projects, and I always feel like I'm getting ripped off. Example: I had a plumber come and re-plumb a broken drain pipe coming out of the utility sink in my basement. Took him maybe 4-5 hours.

Materials:

* 4 cinderblocks to raise sink.

* maybe 20 feet of PVC pipe.

* A check valve.

* ~5 PVC joints.

Those materials couldn't have cost more than $50.

*Labor: call it 5 hours, at say $85/hour, seems about standard for other tradesmen.

Total = $425 + $50 = $475.

Guess what he charged me? $800 EIGHT HUNDRED FREAKING DOLLARS. I just don't see how that is possible.

At the time I was inexperienced and naive, so I paid him without protest. But I felt very ripped off when I stepped back to think about it.

Now, I know it's a skilled labor. This guy did do good work, was prompt and courteous, and left a neat, tidy worksite when he was done. I didn't see even a hint of plumber's crack. I appreciated that. But do they have to gouge us on the bottom line?

I've had other work done on my house by other tradesmen, and it just always seems like the plumbers charge way more for a similar sized job. I feel like they're just ripping us off because they know we can't do plumbing work ourselves legally in Massachusetts.

Is it just my imagination? Is it just a fact of life around here? Anyone know a good, reasonable plumber?Yell

What's with people who bring whatever big item they are mailing up to the clerk at the Post Office, and then expect the clerk to find them the right size box, while everyone in line has to wait for them to pack the thing up, write the address on it and pay?  It takes forever!  I just get really annoyed when I'm in a rush at the P.O. and I have to wait for some old lady who is mailing a toy car to her grandkid to figure out how to mail it.  There are stations where you can pick the right box, and pack it all up, around every post office I've been to.  It's not that hard.  Use it!

Unexpected item in bagging area! Print E-mail

Okay I know we've all had to have experienced this. You're at the self checkout in Home Depot or Shaws, with your five things to buy, and the stupid machine gets into one of it's "unexpected" cycles...

"Unexpected item in bagging area! Please remove item to continue."

Okay... exactly what item WERE you expecting? Fine. I'll remove it.

"Item removed from bagging area!!!!"

Well, okay then. I'll put it back.

"Unexpected item in bagging area!"

ok fine

"ITEM REMOVED FROM BAGGING AREA!!!" wha??? "UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA!!!!" stop yelling at me "ITEM REMOVED FROM BAGGING AREA!!!!!!!!!"

So now you are stuck with this thing going haywire and of course there is no one around to help you out. I think it is clear these machines are on a power trip and need to be stopped before they become self aware.

No seriously, someone needs to figure out how to calibrate the scale on the bagging properly. This happens to me routinely and it's frustrating as hell because you really can't get out of the cycle. I usually end up half lifting up whatever I just put in the bag so that it weighs less and satisfies the machine... if you find the right point you can get it to shut up. But then you're stuck holding the thing with one hand, lest it start yelling at you again, so you have to check out the rest of your stuff with one hand. It totally sucks. What ever happened to hiring cashiers?

Also, why does it check the weight of the thing at all?  After all there is no one there actually checking anything.  If I wanted to steal something... I just wouldn't put it in the bagging area...

Hi everyone, new here.  But totally psyched that it was sunny until 5:30 yesterday!  I love the fact that congress made Daylight Savings last longer this year, but I wish they would just abandon Standard Time altogether, and live on DST (summer time) year round.

Yeah, the downside is that it gets light later in the morning.  But I think most people, at least most people I know, get up around that time anyways (7am or so), so big deal?  It's really great to have it light later in the day.  I hate leaving work in the afternoon in the dark!

This weekend the clocks will go back and we'll be thrust back into darkness at 4:30 every day.  People will start jumping off of the Tobin bridge, the Pats will start losing (ok probably not), and everything will turn to anarchy, until next spring when we can turn them forward again.  Why bother changing the clocks for just a few months out of the year?
