Why is taking a cab in Boston so expensive? I have lived in other major cities, like LA, Chicago, and NYC, and I feel Boston is by far the most expensive. I took a cab from the Whiskies by the Pru to Davis Square the other day, and it ended up being more than $20. I must be a little numb to this fact recently, but after I got out, I couldn't help it to think..."what the heck just happened?" In NYC, I could pretty much go anywhere for several dollars (7~10), but in Boston, I am forced to take the T that often doesn't even come. I heard that Menino is trying to raise prices again. Wow. Can I hear from others how much the cab fares have been for you? (Start/End/TimeOfDay/Price)
Readers have left 16 comments. 1. MeteorSmasher I will start: Prudential/Davis Square/1AM/$24 (after tip) 2. Guest User gov't center/galleria mall/ $10 3. TheSkeptic When I moved here from Manhattan, I did look up the fare differences. Boston is $1.75 base, plus 30 cents per 1/8 mile. New York is $2.50 base, plus 40 cents per 1/5 mile. 4. crashbang hmm..was it rush hour that you took the cab? Otherwise you got screwed. I have never paid that much from downtown to the Davis area. I work at the pru and I live in Davis aswell. I usually pay around $13. I assume you watched the route he took? Driving slow? Intentionally missing lights. I've seen it all. 5. Somebody's Lying crashbang, simple math says you are cheap, because from downtown to Davis, it must be at least 5 miles. $0.30x8x5miles = $14.40 plus base of $1.75..that's more than $13. am i missing something 6. Chris crashbang's got it right. Sometimes the cabbies here try to screw you over by taking a messed up route. I've had it happen to me a bunch of times, especially when I was new. You have to speak up if you think they are trying to screw you. 7. Bones it's 5 mile on the nose from downtown to Davis. Always close to $20 in my experience.
re: TheSkeptic -- that makes cabs 40 cents per mile more expensive here than NY right? Not really a huge difference, esp. considering the base price is higher in NY. I wonder if the difference is just that in NY you are more likely to take a shorter cab ride. Manhattan is only about 10 miles long, and I bet most cab rides are more like a mile or two. 8. big man Yah cabs are stupid around here. It seems like whenever I jump in a cab, I jump out at the other end $20 lighter, at least. If the T ran past 12:30 I'd take it more often, but you are kind of stuck when you find yourself piss-drunk in downtown boston at 2am and miles from home. By that time you are so happy just to FIND an unoccupied cab that paying $20 seems like a gift. 9. big man And in reference to crashbang: I've learned to always direct the cab driver, all the way to my house. Some of them are fine but some of them try to screw you just because they know you are drunk and think you aren't paying attention. 10. #1 red sox fan Kenmore -> central square is usually 10-15 bucks depending on driver and traffic. 11. jholtz Davis square to longwood runs up to $30. Admittedly a long way, but I could rent a car for the day for that... of course then there is parking... 12. Smidgen $30 within the same city. That's insane! For that price, you can fly to Islip (Long Island) on Southwest. 13. TunaTacoGrande Smidgen, you could do a $30 cab ride from Harlem to Wall Street during rush hour (I live in Manhattan). 14. crashbang I think it has been relatively cheap for me because typically the cabbie gets right on Storrow and hits the highway. Usually it is at night and the traffic is not a problem. I understand the mileage question, but since I am not waiting at lights and know where to direct the cabbie if he seems like he's f%ucking around it is usually not that expensive. And yes, when it comes to cabbies that barely acknowledge my existence because they are talking on their cell phone, drive so horribly I am clutching onto anything I can to resist screaming as said cabbie ducks and weaves through traffic with no regard. When his cab smells like rotting flesh. If I feel (being a girl) that the flirtatious, yet creepy cabbie is one sentence away from "put the lotion in the basket"....I will not tip him more than a buck! Yes that's right, I will be a cheap bastard at that point. 16. Guest User $30 within the same city. That's insane! For that price, you can fly to Islip (Long Island) on Southwest. — Smidgen |
