I guess I just don't get it.  I get the whole idea of going out after a day of skiing and getting plastered, dancing, or whatever else you want to do.  But why on earth do we have to use the french language to express this?  Is English not descriptive enough?  "After Skiing" or "Post Ski" doesn't do the job?

Or were the French the first to think of going out after a hard day of skiing?  Were English-speaking peoples sitting around post-ski playing solitaire when some guy named Jaques came in one day and showed them how to party?  ("Gee, why didn't we think of this?")

I know it's a stupid thing to be ranting about, but it irks me because it sounds so damned pretentious when people say it.  Get real, people!

I think it's kinda cool. I don't mind a little variety here and there. Anyways, to those of use who don't speak french it just kind of takes on its own meaning, since we don't associate it with french.

Meh. Apres-ski, after-ski, whatever. Just get me a martini!

I don't get it either. We don't use french to describe any other aspects of skiing. It's not like music where everything is in italian or something.

It just kind of... is. Kind of interesting that its become such a colloquialism.

Also strange that we don't have a specific term for going out drinking (or whatever) after any other activities. At least not that I can think of. Like, after work drinks. Apres-work?

Well, skiing is obviously big in the Alps. I think people just brought the term back here and it stuck. I agree that it sounds a little pretentious to the uninitiated though.
